WEST CHICAGO VFW SPONSORS CHS TEACHER,
MARY ELLEN DANEELS, TO TEACH IN ANGOLA
This summer, Mary Ellen Daneels, Social Studies teacher at Community High School District #94 in West Chicago, will be working in Angola. Ms. Daneels will be helping RISE international conduct teacher training and to continue to build schools. Thanks to the Community Leadership students Geoff Wilson and Lauren McCaffrey, the West Chicago VFW became a partner in the CHS WeGo 2 Africa project. In their continued support of this effort, the West Chicago VFW is sponsoring Ms. Daneels to go to Africa. For the past several years Ms. Daneels has been the school liaison to the VFW.
The mission of the VFW is to "Honor the dead by helping the living." This is accomplished through veterans' service, community service, national security and a strong national defense. Ms. Daneels states, "As the students pointed out in their presentation to the Veteran's, the WeGo 2 Africa Project provides for community service. The educational opportunities, at the school we sponsor in Angola, also provides for literacy skills. This gives these citizens, in this young nation, the tools they need to make informed decisions. This will help democracy thrive and avoid future conflicts, thus enhancing our national security and defense."
