Downtown West Chicago to Host Annual Garden Festival
West Chicago, Illinois: March 20, 2007 - West Chicago will be blooming again on Saturday, May 19, 2007, with the 7th Annual Blooming Fest, the city's downtown garden festival and signature spring event which includes a benefit 5k Run/Walk and 2k Family Fun Run for We Grow Dreams.
Organizers are hoping to expand the event by moving it further west and closing Main Street from Turner Court to West Washington Street to accommodate a larger craft fair, street art, more parking, greater participation among merchants and a stage to showcase local talent from area schools.
The highly anticipated plant sale, held by the West Chicago Garden Club, will also enjoy an upgrade thanks to the generosity of NorthStar Credit Union/WECO Community. A 30' x 40' tent will be erected on Galena Street in the historic downtown and serve as the showcase for hundreds of spectacular perennials, herbs, shrubs and trees. Easy access via High Street to the alley off of Galena will allow green thumbed shoppers to load up their plant treasures from a holding area after spending the day browsing the outdoor crafts and the in-store specials offered along Main Street.
Music and entertainment, coordinated by Wheaton Academy, will take center stage near downtown's landmark fountain, as will a bridal fashion show featuring gowns and formal wear for every member of the bridal party by Casa Rios Bridals with floral arrangements from West Chicago's own Jacobsen's Florist. Street art, coordinated by the West Chicago Chamber of Commerce will provide a creative outlet through an 'asphalt canvas' for the beginner through experienced chalk artist, and food vendors will be on hand to serve breakfast and lunch.
Registration for the race has begun and those interested should contact Rich Slansberg at (630) 653-0888. The run/walk, which winds along the charming residential streets of the downtown district, begins at 7:30 a.m., with all other Blooming Fest activities starting at 9:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m.
Volunteers are still needed to help plant downtown containers and public courtyards the week before Blooming Fest and are asked to call City Hall at (630) 293-2200 ext. 141 to R.S.V.P.
