Celebrates Gary School's 50th Birthday
Gary Elementary School in West Chicago Elementary School District 33 is celebrating its 50th birthday this year! "Gary School is a very special place", said Sue Stibal, project chairperson. "We wanted to provide a special keepsake that would remind current students, and 50 years of former students, of the huge role Gary School played in their lives."
In honor of this event, the Gary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) has commissioned a 24K gold-finished brass commemorative ornament, depicting the front facade of the school. The ornament is 3-dimentional, and is approximately 3" wide and 2 1/2" high.
Gary Elementary School has a rich history in West Chicago. Construction began in 1955 on 13 acres of the former Edward Brown farm. Gary School opened for the first day of school on September 4, 1956. Originally a 12-classroom school with a gym/cafeteria, kindergarten and music room, only 10 rooms were ready at the time and 247 students were enrolled. Named for the Gary family, who established the settlement at Gary’s Mill, the school is made of common brick and cement block, and was designed by the architectural firm Frazier & Raftery of Geneva. Three rooms were added in 1970, with several additions taking place over the years, including four classrooms in 1987. Currently Gary school has 23 classrooms and an enrollment of about 504 students in grades Kindergarten - 6.
The ornaments make great stocking stuffers at just $5.00 each (plus $3.00 shipping for mail orders), and are available through Gary School PTO at the school at 130 E. Forest Avenue, or by calling Sue Stibal at (630) 231.4548, or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Order forms are also available online at www.wegoed33.k12.il.us, then follow the links for Gary School.
