Mother's Day Community Pancake Breakfast at CHS

A Mother's Day Community Pancake Breakfast will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2006 in the Commons at Community High School, 326 Joliet Street in West Chicago. The event, which is sponsored by the CHS Teachers Association, is planned as a community event to celebrate the contributions that mothers make to their families and to the community. The event date lies between the Mexican and American Mother's Days, because the teachers wanted to include both cultures in their celebration.

More than breakfast will be provided, however. The event will feature a variety of booths and activities such as face painting and crafts for mothers and their children. There will also be a children's coloring contest, and high school students will be eligible for an essay contest in English or Spanish to honor their mothers. The essays are due on Monday, May 8. Winners of both contests will be recognized at the event. The prizes for these contests, as well as for a raffle open to all, include gift certificates and gift baskets.

Tickets will be $4 for adults and $2 for children. Proceeds from the event will benefit the We-Go 2 Africa project sponsored by the Community Leadership class. The class is raising money to build a school in Angola, which has been ravaged by civil war. Many of that country's schools were destroyed during that decade of conflict. To date, CHS students have raised more than $7,500 toward their goal of $10,000. For more information, call Mona Elleithee at 876-6486.
