West Chicago event scheduled for August 2

WEST CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, JULY 7, 2005 – Neighborhoods throughout West Chicago are invited to join communities nationwide and participate in West Chicago’s annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 2, 2005.

National Night Out (NNO) is a nationwide event designed to generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and improve the relationship between the community police department and residents. It involves 9,700 communities from all 50 states. In all, 33 million people are expected to participate in “America’s National Night Out Against Crime.”

To celebrate National Night Out, all residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outdoors with their neighbors.

"This is a night for West Chicago to stand together to promote safety awareness and neighborhood unity,” said West Chicago Crime Prevention Specialist, Leo Aviles. “National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police and community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer community.”

West Chicago will be hosting its 16th annual event from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the West Chicago Community High School west parking lot. This free event gives people the opportunity to meet with elected officials and law enforcement officers, while receiving tips on crime prevention and safety material. Law enforcement displays will be on hand for the public to view and participate in. The West Chicago Fire Protection District also will have safety demonstrations available.

This year, joining the West Chicago Police Department will be Superman, Batman, McGruff ® the Crime Dog, Sparky the Fire Dog, Star War’s Chewbacca, Yoda, Darth Vader and Jedi Knights. Bring your cameras for a perfect photo opportunity with these celebrities. Live music will be provided by Déjà vu. Free raffle prizes and giveaways will be given out.
