Central American Free Trade Agreement
“Since President Bush took office, America has lost 2.8 million manufacturing jobs. 140,000 manufacturing jobs in my home state of Illinois are gone, never to return. And this trade agreement will only make things worse.”
Sen. Obama Why I oppose CAFTA
"It does less to protect labor than previous trade agreements, and does little to address enforcement of basic environmental standards in the Central American countries and the Dominican Republic."
Obama Praises Senate Decision to Provide VA $1.5 Billion for Veterans' Health Care
Rep Hastert Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA)
“Congress needs to review the program, in light of Treasury’s report which suggests that any continuation of the program needs to incorporate more market-based solutions, which would shield the taxpayer from unfair exposure."

29 Jun Sen Peter Roskam Roskam’s measure prohibiting state business with Sudan becomes law
“Christians are dying in that country by the thousands and those that survive have no place to go because their homes and villages are being destroyed. As a government body, the state of Illinois should not use public funds in such a way that those funds could be used to financially benefit the Sudanese government.”
charicature.jpg (9859 bytes)Lemon - WegoWeb Comparison of District 33 Reports on Administrative Salaries.

Senator

PRESIDENT BUSH’S SPEECH ON IRAQ
"America has invested too much and lost too many soldiers to turn its back on the people of Iraq. We cannot cut and run and leave chaos in our wake, but we cannot achieve our goal of a safe and stable Iraq until the President puts forward a comprehensive plan for success and a clear strategy for how we will achieve it."

Sen. Obama $1 Billion Shortfall in VA Health Care Budget Requires Emergency Funding

He was interrupted twice by applause when he vowed to fight for Illinois military bases targeted for realignment and for $1 billion in additional funding needed to maintain veterans' hospitals and clinics."
Sen. Obama What I See in Lincoln's Eyes
"He neither demonized the fathers and sons who did battle on the other side nor sought to diminish the terrible costs of his war. In the midst of slavery's dark storm and the complexities of governing a house divided, he somehow kept his moral compass pointed firm and true."
Technology Key to Cutting Health Care Costs
"In the United States, nearly $1.5 trillion dollars a year is spent on health care in America. But one out of every four dollars is spent on non-medical costs, most of it on bills and paperwork."
U.S. Senator Barack Obama addresses the American Library Association
"It is a pleasure to address you today because of what libraries represent. More than a building that houses books and data, the library has always been a window to a larger world - a place where we've always come to discover big ideas and profound concepts that help move the American story forward."

"Illinois will become the first state in the nation to divest itself of financial interest in the repressive state.  Since February 2003, the Sudanese government and ethnic militias have been fighting two rebel groups from the country’s Darfur region, resulting in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing."
