West Chicago Police Department forms CSI Unit

WEST CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, JUNE 13, 2005 – Chief Stephen Kuhn announced today the formation of an in-house Crime Scene Investigations Unit (“CSI Unit”) at the West Chicago Police Department. The CSI Unit will be composed of eight patrol officers and one civilian employee.

All CSI Unit members will be certified in the protection, collection, and documentation of evidence. Some of the members may have attended specialized classes up to and including the Federal Bureau of Investigations advanced crime scene investigations course.

According to Deputy Chief Don Goncher of the West Chicago Police Department, this is the first time in the Department’s history where a Crime Scene Investigations Unit has been implemented. Crime Scene Investigations will be available to respond to scenes 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"The DuPage County Sheriff’s Police Crime Scene Investigations Unit has been responsible for processing all crime scenes in West Chicago until the present time. They will continue to support our in-house team in more complex crime scenes. With the creation of this team, we will be better prepared to assist our community," commented Goncher.

The team will be led by Deputy Chief Donald Goncher and supervised by Detective Commander Laz Perez.
