Leon Richardt Auxiliary
Plans for Memorial Day Observance
The bus will go to the VFW (around 7:30 am) to pick up the guys and then to the Legion to pick up the other guys. They will then go to Glen Oak Cemetery on Arbor Avenue. There, the firing squad will render the 21 gun salute and a bugler will play Taps. Then they will get back on the bus and go to Calvary Cemetery on Washington Street. They will again render the 21 gun salute and play Taps. From Calvary they will proceed to St. John's in Winfield (on Beecher Ave I think). Again, 21 gun salute and Taps. The bus will then take the guys back to the VFW post for coffee and some refreshments. They'll regroup and then go to Oak Wood Cemetery across from St. Mary's Church in West Chicago by 10:00 am. Once at Oak Wood, there will be a speaker - Army Staff Sergeant David Haire, an Army recruiter out of Naperville is scheduled. SSGT Haire was in the 10th Mountain Division and in Afghanistan during the early part of the war. His cell number is 877-592-5956. He may be bringing a few of his buddies from the 10th Mtn Div. Reverend Dumke from St. Andrews Lutheran Church in West Chicago will provide the spiritual part of the program. There will be the 21 gun salute and Taps. The West Chicago Community High School band will be there. In the past, the Ladies Auxiliaries from the Legion and VFW laid a wreath at the base of the Soldiers and Sailors monument at the cemetery. The last time they laid the wreath at the monument, they left it there, so I don't know if they have a new one or not. By the way, the bus and driver are provided by the West Chicago Park District. This is a very nice service they provide.
Also in the past, we had Gene Rennels perform as M.C. However, he is not going to be able to be there this time. Chuck Scheckel may do the honors. Don Smith is usually commander of the firing squad. I can't tell you who will be on the firing squad or color guard because we don't know until we see who shows up.
The veteran graves at all the cemeteries should already have been decorated by members of the VFW and Legion the day before.
Hope to see you there. Don't forget to wear your Poppy!
