West Chicago is blooming at downtown garden festival
WEST CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, APRIL 8, 2005 – West Chicago's fifth annual Blooming Fest will be held on Saturday, May 14th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in historic downtown West Chicago. This year's event will include a plant sale, Master Gardener advisory program, craft show, children's activities, a community flower-planting project and a 5K run.
The West Chicago Garden Club will have its annual Plant Sale at the Fox Community Center, 306 Main Street. Annual and perennial plants and flowers, groundcovers, shrubs and much more will be for sale at very reasonable prices.
Master Gardeners from the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service will be available to answer gardening, bug, lawn, weed, and other questions from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to all visitors free of charge.
The craft show with over 40 vendors will feature exhibitors selling gourmet foods, T-shirt blankets, jewelry, watercolor paintings, skin care products, wooden benches, candles, garden-related items and much more. Hotdogs, sub sandwiches and beverages will also be available.
Children's activities include visiting with McGruff (R) The Crime Dog and free face painting sponsored by Wheaton Academy. Kids and parents alike can take part in the hands-on project of making recycled paper, sponsored by the DuPage County Solid Waste Education Center. Kids can also participate in the sidewalk chalk event sponsored by the West Chicago Middle School.
The 5K run, sponsored by Ball Horticultural, will benefit We Grow Dreams, Inc., a charitable, retail/wholesale greenhouse that will provide people with special needs an opportunity to train and work in a supportive and safe environment. The 5K Run/Walk begins at Chicago and Main Streets near Sesquicentennial Park in West Chicago.
Volunteers can play an active role in beautifying the community by participating in the West Chicago downtown flower-planting project. Flowers are planted throughout the historic downtown. The planting will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2005, before the festival begins. Volunteers are needed for this project and are encouraged to sign-up in advance at the contact number provided below.
