To Merl Burleigh From Rosemarie Nolazco...

I am PTO co-president at Turner School and parent of a first and sixth grader. I would like to make you aware of an outstading accomplishment made by our sixth grade community problem solvers team. They have been working on a community service project of their own design called "SOS" for "Save Our Senior". These students have worked with Mrs. Jean Ann Held and West Chicago Fireman Lee Westrom to raise funds, purchase smoke detectors and batteries, learned to install smoke detectors, identified seniors who might benefit from their project (as you may remember the story you did in fall 2004 after seeing the kids at the senior fish fry at the fire department), and then made house calls and visited with seniors to install working smoke detectors. This project was submitted to a branch of Future Problem Solvers. Their project was rated against other community projects in the state and was selected to represent the State of Illinois at the upcoming International Conference in June in Lexington , Kentucky. Now the team needs the communities help. Funds must be raised in order to attend this conference. We estimate that about $13,000. is needed to send the team of fifteen students and two teachers to the conference. I would appreciate your help in getting this information back into the Press publication. Please contact myself or Jean Ann Held at Turner School for more information. Thank you for your time and consideration.
