Community High School Receives IL EPA
Greening Schools Grant

Community High School District 94 in West Chicago has been awarded an Illinois EPA Greening Schools grant in the amount of $2,500 to install native prairie landscaping on the west side of the school building. Students of Botany teacher Corrie Stieglitz will collaborate with a landscape architect to plan the landscape design and with a plant biologist to choose the native plant species to be included.

"My students have visited Tri-County State Park to learn more about the prairie ecosystem," said Stieglitz. "They have learned the importance of the this dying ecosystem and how they can restore and preserve the prairie. They have also taken part in collecting native plant seeds to grow in the school greenhouse and share with other schools. The grant project will encourage the students' continued interest in the native prairie and underscore the environmental and water conservation benefits of installing that kind of landscaping. Our Botany class also contains an extensive landscaping unit," she added. "This project will provide a practical 'real world' learning experience for the students."

Ball Horticultural Company, Earth Care Landscaping, Tri-County State Park, Fermi Lab Prairie Project and the West Chicago Prairie Stewardship Group will serve as community partners and resources for the grant project.

"This exciting project will be a great learning experience for our students while enhancing the high school grounds with landscaping that will conserve water and lower maintenance costs. It's good for us and good for the environment," said CHS Principal John Highland.
