Immigration Mural to be Dedicated at Welcome Center

A new mural with an immigration theme, "Leaving Home is to Spread Your Wings," will be dedicated at Community High School at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2005. The mural was designed and painted by students from the Bilingual Art Club and their sponsors, Alina Cyrus and Lorena Samaniego. It was inspired by a poem written by CHS student Marisol Munoz.

"We are dedicating the mural to Adan Villa, one of our students who died last year," said Samaniego. The mural has been painted on wood panels which will be mounted at the Welcome Center near entrance C at the high school. The student artists include Maria Concepcion Benitez, Adrianna Perez, Mariel Nieto, Chelsea Deitz, Fernando Vincens. The high school is located at 326 Joliet Street in West Chicago. The dedication will take place during the high school's International Week: A Celebration of Arts and Cultures.

The Welcome Center is a joint initiative of Community High School District 94 and West Chicago Elementary School District 33. It serves students in grades 4 through 12 who are newcomers to the country.
